Safe Forests Depend on Us Initiative

The Regional Government has launched a new Forest fire prevention campaign.  The project starts today, the 2nd of June, and ends on the 30th of September.

Protecting human lives, safeguarding the region’s environmental heritage, and ensuring sustainability is the name of the game, states Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture.  “For Madeira’s economic model depends on its environmental and botanical beauty.

“The safe forest depends on all of us,” Eduardo Jesus further reiterated, stating that the campaign includes seven radio spots, three videos, and communication actions focused on prevention, safe forest behaviours, land clearing, and reforestation.

Eduardo Jesus revealed the main recommendations are:

Do not light fires in any forest areas and observe no BBQ notices during the peak of summer.

Do not smoke while walking or staying in forest areas.  If you do, make sure that your cigarette is extinguished and take the butt home home with you.

Avoid using machinery that can generate sparks in wooded areas.

Do not leave rubbish in the forest

Only camp in authorised areas.

The Government further reiterates that in the event of a fire, you should ring 112 immediately, and not try to put the fire out yourself.
