Respect Protected Fur Seals

As reported by DIÁRIO, a juvenile fur seal was recently sighted in the waters near Praia Formosa, in Funchal, leading the Regional Government of Madeira to renew the call for the adoption of responsible behaviour towards this protected species.

The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, through the Institute of Forests and the IFCN, issued a statement underlining the importance of respecting the animal’s presence and not causing the animal any distress or panic.

The Madeira fur seal is listed as an endangered species, with an estimated population of around 30 individuals in the archipelago. While sightings have become more common, a promising sign of the environmental policies adopted in recent decades, as noted by the government, the species is still highly vulnerable. Madeira has gained international recognition for its conservation efforts, especially through the creation of the Desertas Islands Nature Reserve and the ongoing monitoring and surveillance carried out by the IFCN.

With bathing season approaching and more people heading to coastal areas, the Regional Government has stressed the importance of following good practices when encountering these animals. On land, keep a safe distance, avoid touching or feeding them, minimise local noise, and keep domestic animals away. At sea, whether swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, or diving, avoid any interaction and stay out of the water if a fur seal is present. When navigating, never deliberately chase or approach the animal; if it comes near, maintain a steady and calm course.

The IFCN stresses that the protection of the species also depends on the collaboration of the population and visitors, and it is essential to minimise human interactions to ensure the tranquility and safety of the animals.

All sightings must be reported through the lobomarinhomadeira.com portal or through the WhatsApp of the SOS Wildlife Network number +351 961 957 545.
