Madeira Joins European Suveillance Mission

The Regional Directorate for Fisheries joins the European control and surveillance mission that takes place this month under the Joint Use Plan (JDP) of the European Union for the Western Waters.

According to a press release, “Operation OP#10 will take place in sub-area 2 of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covering the Region and the maritime area between Funchal and the mainland, with the support of the European Fisheries Control Agency vessel (EFCA), the FPV Ocean Protector.”

It also says that “the mission will have the participation of a multidisciplinary team, composed of one fisheries inspector from the Region, two inspectors from the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM), as well as the ship’s crew and EFCA operatives.”

It also states that “the general objectives of the mission are to detect possible fishing activity by third-country vessels in Union waters and the monitoring of activity of fishing in the sub-areas by national and community vessels.”

It also points out that “the ship is deployed as part of multifunctional operations within the framework of the European cooperation in coast guard functions.” Adding: “The vessel, during its operations, is available to support other coast guard functions, namely providing support in search and rescue situations, maritime surveillance, and pollution response.”

In addition, he reveals that “this action is part of the strengthening of European cooperation in the field of the supervision of promoting the sustainability of marine resources and combating illegal, undeclared and unregulated fishing.”

The ship will arrive in the Region on Saturday.
