An expert report commissioned by the Central Court of Criminal Investigation (TCIC) has concluded that the NRP Mondego was in a “generalised state of structural and functional degradation, with a direct impact on safety,” according to a report published today by Correio da Manhã.
According to the newspaper, the findings of the investigation contradict statements previously made by Admiral Gouveia e Melo regarding the vessel’s operational condition.
Citing the report, Correio da Manhã states that the ship suffered from problems affecting the port engine, the electrical power system, and the firefighting system. The report also notes that the vessel had only one operational navigation radar and hull damage in several areas.
The case dates back to 2023, when military personnel refused to board the NRP Mondego, citing safety concerns. The incident led to a complaint being filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office by the Navy, then under the command of Admiral Gouveia e Melo. The sailors involved were subjected to disciplinary proceedings and accused of disobedience and insubordination.
The newspaper also recalled remarks made at the time by the then Chief of Staff of the Navy, Gouveia e Melo, during a visit to Madeira to reprimand the military personnel involved.
“The Navy does not send ships to sea if we consider that these ships pose any risk to their crews.”
