Fears Over the Pandemic Grow

Today, the 6th of January, the municipalities of Funchal, Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos and Porto Santo registered the highest number of positive Covid cases. During today's bulletin 37 new cases were registered in Funchal, 26 in Santa Cruz, 14 in Câmara de Lobos and 10 new infections in Porto Santo were confirmed.

Curfew Begins at Midnight

The Regional Government has passed a resolution regarding the restriction of movement. The resolution states that “as of 00:00 on the 5th of January 2021, while the state of emergency is in force or there are municipalities at high risk, travelling on public roads is prohibited in the Autonomous Region of Madeira between 11 pm and 5 am, with the following exceptions:”

Mobility Will Be Restricted

In a tense press conference, the President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque categorically stated that if people do not start behaving themselves and take the situation seriously, he will have no option but to construct containment fences, and restrict movement from one parish to another.

Policeman Assaulted While on Duty

A police officer was attacked on Saturday morning at Rua das Fontes, in Funchal, when he and other Rapid Response Brigade officers officially closed a bar that was flouting the new health and safety rules. The bar, which was busy with youngsters was open after midnight and selling alcohol, while its patrons continued to gather in a public space.
