Madeira is set to undergo a reorganisation as a tourist destination, a change that may be unpopular but is deemed necessary to maintain its quality and sustainability, announced the President of the Regional Government.
“We are entering a new phase,” said Miguel Albuquerque. “We will work closely with tourism agents to enhance the destination’s offerings in terms of quality, preserve the landscape, and promote both natural and cultural heritage, ensuring that tourists can enjoy the island alongside our residents.”
The regional leader emphasized that the main goal is to address certain challenges in some of the island’s more popular spots. Albuquerque stated that the secretary responsible has been instructed to initiate a qualitative reorganisation of these areas, which may include charging fees to provide proper health, safety, and hygiene infrastructure, ensuring the high-quality of the attractions.
He highlighted that the aim is to keep Madeira a premium destination with prices aligned to sustain ecological balance. Albuquerque added that these measures would be implemented soon to ensure Madeira remains a top-notch and environmentally sustainable destination.
“I want to be clear,” he concluded. “These measures may not please everyone, but we are here to make decisions in the interest of our region, our population, and our tourism sector, as mandated by the elections.”
