Last Thursday, a video captured in the west of Madeira brought to light a concerning incident regarding visitor conduct in one of Fanal’s protected areas. The footage, recorded by a local safari guide, showed a group of tourists, including young children, deliberately bypassing a protective barrier to access a delimited green space that was clearly marked as off-limits.
The incident drew immediate attention to the ongoing challenges of managing human impact in sensitive natural environments. Following the vandalism, the existing fence suffered structural damage, necessitating an immediate intervention by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN).
By the following morning, IFCN employees were already on-site working to replace and repair the damaged barrier. In the wake of these events, the IFCN issued a firm reminder to the public regarding the importance of respecting signage and access rules. They emphasised that these fences are not mere suggestions; they are critical infrastructure designed to:
- Protect fragile natural habitats from degradation.
- Safeguard the integrity of the ecosystem.
- Ensure the safety of visitors themselves by keeping them on authorised, monitored paths.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the collective responsibility shared by both visitors and authorities to preserve the natural beauty and safety of Madeira’s protected landscapes.
