Francisco Gomes, a Chega deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, has successfully secured approval in the Committee on Infrastructure, Housing and Mobility for a draft resolution authored by his party. The proposal recommends that the national government implement a regular maritime connection for passengers and cargo between Madeira and the mainland.
The initiative, discussed and approved during this morning’s committee session, urges the government to honour the commitments made to the people of Madeira and the obligations set out in the State Budget regarding the reinstatement of the ferry service.
“The ferry is not a whim, nor is it a matter of opinion. It must be a commitment of the State to Madeira in the face of a strategic need for mobility, the economy, and the territorial cohesion of the region.” Francisco Gomes, Assembly of the Republic Deputy.
The parliamentarian recalled that the connection is a long-standing demand of the Madeiran population and an important tool for strengthening competition in transport, reducing costs, and increasing available mobility options. According to Francisco Gomes, Chega “will continue to insist on this matter until the connection is effectively resumed.”
The resolution now moves to a plenary vote, where the deputy hopes it will “garner the support of the majority of the political forces represented in the Assembly of the Republic.”
