Funchal – Better Mobility Access Needed

The Socialist Group is set to present a motion tomorrow at the Funchal Municipal Assembly, proposing a recommendation to improve accessibility and travel conditions for individuals with reduced mobility within the municipality.

In a statement sent to the press, the socialists warned that several persistent constraints continue to limit mobility in Funchal. Key issues identified include numerous architectural barriers, a shortage of appropriately adapted parking spaces, the unauthorised occupation of reserved bays, restricted pedestrian access, inadequacies in accessible public transport, poorly equipped bus stops, and narrow pavements.

To resolve these issues, the party has proposed a range of measures, including additional parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities, particularly in the city centre and in the vicinity of key public services, healthcare facilities, and economic hubs.

The initiative also calls for an exemption from, or a reduction in, parking meter fees for holders of disability parking badges. The party argues that this would ensure that the time required to travel and attend to personal or professional matters does not act as a barrier or discriminate against those with mobility issues.

Furthermore, the PS deputies advocate for an improved network of public transport tailored to the needs of those with reduced mobility, including extending operating hours until midnight.

“A truly inclusive city guarantees all citizens the possibility of fully experiencing public spaces, participating in community life, and enjoying the opportunities the city offers,” stated PS Funchal. “Guaranteeing mobility for all is a fundamental principle of equity; it ensures that no one is left behind.”
