“This proposal arises from the urgent need to ensure environmental recovery, prevent future disasters, and ensure that the tragedy of fires is not exploited for purposes that do not serve the public interest,” is detailed by Miguel Pita.
Ecosystem Recovery: Burnt areas need time to regenerate naturally. Construction in these areas can interrupt the process of natural regeneration of forests, preventing the recovery of biodiversity and habitats that are essential for the ecological balance of our island.
Prevention of New Fires: The natural vegetation that regenerates after a fire plays a key role in retaining water and protecting the soil from erosion. Construction in burnt areas, especially on sloping terrain, can increase the risk of landslides and the recurrence of fires, by introducing combustible elements and making access difficult for future firefighting actions.
Prevent Real Estate Speculation: A 20-year ban on construction in the areas affected by the fires is also necessary to prevent real estate speculation. Without this prohibition, there is a risk that these areas will be quickly acquired at low cost, only to be developed for private purposes, to the detriment of the needs of environmental protection and the well-being of local communities, is also sustained, in a logic of responsibility towards future generations.”
