Christmas Retail Opening Times Debate

Ivo Silva, the Chairman of the Board of the Union of Office, Commerce and Services Workers of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (SITAM), has indicated that the Câmara of Funchal is indifferent “to the problems that affect three thousand workers, and has proposed that during the Christmas season retail establishments should close at 7 pm on weekdays, at 2 pm on Saturdays and not open at all on Sundays or public holidays.”

During a visit to a school in Caniço, the President of the Regional Government was asked whether nightclubs would be forced to close again.  However, Miguel Albuquerque refused to be drawn into the debate saying that he will announce the new restrictive measures himself tomorrow from Quinta Vigia. 

Madeira – 16 Million Euros Laundered by Italian Mafia

According to media outlet JN, Società Foggiana, one of the "most brutal and violent Italian mafias," laundered 16 million euros through two companies based in Madeira, through a scheme that allowed Società Foggiana to benefit from European Union Community Funds intended to support rural development.
