Christmas Market – Solutions Being Sought

The Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia has confirmed that the Câmara do Funchal (CMF) is trying to do everything possible to ensure that this year’s Market Night on the 23rd of December goes ahead as planned.

In a statement, the Mayor reiterated that this year the Funchal City Council has already sent a proposal for the Market Night to the Institute of Health Administration (IASaúde) and are waiting for an answer.  He went on to say that he is willing to accept any or all solutions that allow the traditional market to go ahead.

He further indicated that if the party is held within the market, social distancing will be possible as they can monitor the space, and limit the number of people entering the building. In his statement, he went on to say that the CMF ‘will be able to find solutions and by doing so we will be able to allow local farmers and traders to sell their produce and products.  However, this year, there will be no food or drink stalls.

Concluding, the Mayor said that he is looking to maintain local traditions while fulfilling all IASaúde health and safety requirements.
