The man detained by the Public Security Police (PSP) on suspicion of carrying out a violent robbery on Avenida Sá Carneiro in Funchal has been ordered by the court to leave the Autonomous Region of Madeira within five days.
In a statement, the PSP said the suspect was subjected to several coercive measures following his first judicial hearing. These include reporting daily to the PSP and a prohibition on remaining in or circulating on public roads between 17:00 and 08:00.
As reported by DIÁRIO in its Wednesday print edition, Madeira’s Regional PSP Command explained that the incident dates back to the morning of the 25th of May, when officers received a complaint regarding the theft of a mobile phone belonging to a 25-year-old Swiss tourist, who was allegedly subjected to a violent assault during the robbery.
The PSP said that officers from the Funchal Police Station and the Criminal Investigation Squad immediately undertook investigative measures. The cooperation of a witness proved crucial in the rapid identification of the suspect.
“Based on footage provided by a witness who assisted the victim, police were able to direct their search and locate the suspect at a hotel in Funchal,” the statement reads.
After confirming the suspect’s identity and gathering evidence, including footage from Funchal’s public CCTV surveillance system, officers arrested the man under a warrant issued by the PSP.
The PSP also revealed that the robbery investigation was linked to a separate report prepared by the Maritime Police concerning disturbances allegedly caused by the suspect aboard the Lobo Marinho during its return journey from Porto Santo. According to the report, the man became involved in an altercation with another passenger and allegedly attempted to throw the individual overboard. The intervention of other passengers reportedly prevented the attempt.
Police further stated that, at the time of his arrest, the suspect was allegedly harassing three guests at the hotel where he was staying. Although the guests declined to file a formal complaint, officers noted that they were left considerably distressed by the incident.
Many of those writing on social media have queried why such a person has not been held in prison or immediately deported. Details of the man’s nationality have been withheld by the authorities.
