PSP Agent Badly Injured

A PSP (Public Security Police) officer was seriously injured on Friday following a new collapse on the road between the João Delgado tunnel and the Pedra site, in Seixal, on the expressway between São Vicente and Porto Moniz, after a landslide hit his vehicle, partially destroying it.

According to JM, the victim suffered severe spinal trauma and was rescued on the spot by the Volunteer Firefighters of São Vicente and Porto Moniz, with the support of the EMIR medical team. The agent was later transported to the hospital, where he remains hospitalised. He is said to be in a stable condition.

Only last week, there was another collapse in roughly the same area. Despite successive alerts from the local population, the section continues to show signs of instability on the slope, creating potentially hazardous motoring conditions.

The Mayor of Porto Moniz, Olavo Câmara, recently asked the Regional Government for an alternative route for this section, where rock and landslides killed one couple and led to the death of a young woman.

In response to criticism, Miguel Albuquerque stated this afternoon that the recent collapse in northern Madeira happened outside the area where the Regional Government intends to carry out containment work.

On the sidelines of the ‘Madeira Flower Collection,’ the President of the Madeiran Executive assured that “a large investment” is planned in one of the areas considered to be at greatest risk, stressing, however, that “it is not possible to build containment zones throughout the island.”

The governor said that the Regional Government is attentive and will do its best to control the situation, stating that despite this, “in Madeira we are subject to landslides.”

Miguel Albuquerque also considered that the opposition has politically exploited the situation.
