The Spanish Coast Guard has confirmed that it has suspended its search and rescue operation for the man who fell overboard from the Marella Explorer 2.
The incident occurred last Thursday, the 28th of November, shortly before 10:00, when a 76-year-old passenger fell overboard. The ship was sailing about 16.5 miles northwest of Punta de Teno, heading for the island of La Gomera, after having made a stopover in Madeira on Wednesday.
Following the alert issued by the cruise ship operated by TUI, Spanish authorities launched a vast search operation, scouring the waters north of Tenerife. However, despite their best efforts, the man was not found, and the Coast Guard confirmed that they were operating a reduced search for the victim.
“Although the search has been suspended, warnings have been issued to all ships sailing in the area to remain vigilant.” A spokesman for the Spanish Coast Guard told local media.
The disappearance of the British tourist, who was on vacation, continues to be investigated. For now, there are no indications about the causes of the incident or the possible resumption of search operations.
