New Outside Gym

The Almirante Reis Outdoor Gym in Funchal reopened to the public today at 10:00, following refurbishment works carried out by the Funchal City Council at a cost of around €120,000.

The project included the complete replacement of equipment and the installation of new technical sports flooring designed for outdoor use, improving safety, accessibility, and user comfort.

Speaking at the reopening, Funchal Mayor Jorge Carvalho highlighted the upgrades made to the facility. “We improved the range of equipment available, but also the flooring, which is much more suitable for sporting activity.”

The Mayor also pointed to the gym’s popularity, noting that more than 1,500 people use the space each month. The space is open to everyone.

Regarding the municipality’s wider strategy for this type of infrastructure, Jorge Carvalho said the council intends to continue refurbishing similar public spaces under its responsibility. He added that further interventions are being assessed, potentially with a focus on the Lido area.

The outdoor gym forms part of the municipality’s strategy to promote free and accessible physical activity. Located close to the city’s historic centre and seafront, it has become a popular facility among residents, young people, seniors, and tourists alike.

The refurbished space now includes new equipment such as bicycles, ellipticals, kettlebells, fixed bars, a sit-up platform, bench press, and vertical rowing machines, along with technical flooring and updated information signage.

The contract was awarded to the company GOVI, with CÁPIO responsible for the flooring and finishing works, and VARIOSPORT handling signage and visual elements.
