Drug Filled Gummies Poison Child

A child was in a coma for three days at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, in Funchal, after consuming gummies that allegedly contained illicit substances. The case involved a minor ingesting products taken home by her mother, who works as a cleaner in a local accommodation (AL) property.

According to the same source, the gummies were left in the room by a foreign customer. On the day of cleaning, the mother collected them and took them home, unaware of their possible composition. The child ended up eating them and was later transported to the pediatric emergency department with drug poisoning symptoms.

The packaging of the gummies indicated the presence of a cannabis-derived substance. However, later analysis raised doubts about the nature of the product, admitting that the contents may not correspond exactly to gummies. The case is now being investigated by the authorities, who are seeking to determine the origin and composition of the substances. The young girl is now free from danger.

Responding to the incident, the company that manages the property where the gummies were found has said it regrets what happened and is monitoring the situation closely.

In a statement sent to JM, Marketplace Apartments by Storytellers expresses “its solidarity with the child and his family and expresses its enormous relief at the child’s prognosis.”

“It is important to clarify that the facts in question occurred after the departure of our customers, in a normal context of cleaning operation to prepare the unit for future use. This incident goes beyond the direct scope of operational control; however, we are treating the situation with the utmost seriousness and responsibility, and are fully collaborating with the competent authorities to ascertain all the facts.”

Marketplace Apartments emphasises that its relationship with the subcontractor providing cleaning services is long-standing and has always been built on high standards of professionalism and trust.

“Even so, given the seriousness of the situation, we are reassessing all procedures and protocols associated with the operation, with the aim of reinforcing, in a preventive way, compliance with all safety mechanisms.” Adding, “the safety and well-being of all those who interact with the respective accommodation units are an absolute priority.”

The company understands that “this is a moment that requires responsibility, prudence and respect for all those involved, values by which we will continue to guide our performance.”
