In the Madeiran plenary, on Tuesday morning, the draft resolution, authored by the CDS/PP, entitled ‘Recommends to the State the Use of the European Union Solidarity Fund to address the damage caused by the fires of August 2024’.
MEP Sara Madalena explained its content, considering that what happened in Madeira fits into the situations foreseen to activate this mechanism,” as well as claiming support for long-term actions, such as, among others, “reforestation projects”.
Miguel Castro, for Chega, has already noted that “Madeira continues to do nothing.” In other words, “it would no longer be pertinent to question the lack of strategy,” noting that the CDS proposal goes in the direction of “continuing to submit the Region to the goodwill of third parties.”
Will the European Union eternally pay for our failures?” Questioned the parliamentary leader of Chega, stressing that it is time for the “Portuguese State and the Autonomous Region of Madeira to take responsibility to mitigate the damage.”
Rafael Nunes, from the JPP, said that the document “is the CDS itself surrendering to the evidence.” He further warned that this winter could be difficult due to the soil damage and vulnerability as a result of the August fires.
