Bad Weather Predicted

Madeira’s Regional Civil Protection Service is urging residents to take precautions ahead of an expected deterioration in the weather, with potentially heavy rain from Saturday, the 31st of October.

According to DIÁRIO, the rain could be particularly heavy on the southern slopes and in mountainous areas, with thunderstorms also possible on Monday, the 2nd of November.

Forecasts from the Portuguese Institute for Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) indicate generally very cloudy conditions until Friday, with mostly light rain, particularly on the northern slopes and higher ground.

Conditions are expected to worsen over the weekend as weather fronts associated with an area of low pressure northwest of Madeira approach and cross the region. However, IPMA says it is still too early to determine whether rainfall warnings will be issued.

Flooding and Landslide Risks

Civil Protection warns that heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides and falling debris.

Residents are advised to clear gutters and drainage systems where it is safe to do so, removing anything that could obstruct the flow of water. Outdoor furniture, loose objects and structures should also be secured or brought indoors if they could be swept away by wind or water.

Drivers should avoid crossing flooded roads or watercourses and should not drive or park in areas known to be vulnerable to flooding or landslides. Particular care is advised on mountain roads and near steep slopes, where rocks and trees could fall.

Rough Seas into Early November

Waves from the north or northwest could reach between 1.5 and 2.5 metres along Madeira’s north coast and around Porto Santo.

On Madeira’s south coast, waves are initially expected to remain below one metre but could reach two metres on the 2nd of November.

Civil Protection advises people to avoid exposed coastal areas during rough conditions and to observe warning signs, closures and instructions from the authorities.

Residents should continue to monitor IPMA’s forecasts and weather warnings, alongside official Civil Protection updates.
