The proposed Madeira SkyPark tourism development, planned for an area between Curral das Freiras and Jardim da Serra, has received conditional planning approval from the Câmara de Lobos Municipal Council.
The decision represents a further stage in the licensing process and does not constitute final authorisation for the development. The application must now proceed through the remaining administrative procedures and comply with the conditions imposed by the relevant authorities.
The project includes a cable-car system, adventure park, nature interpretation centre and zipline, extending across Curral das Freiras, the Paredão viewpoint and Boca da Corrida.
In a statement, the developers described the council’s decision as “a relevant advance” for the project.
Madeira SkyPark chief executive Nuno Freitas called it “a very relevant milestone” and said the company would continue working with the relevant authorities to meet the required procedures and conditions.
The developers say the project is intended to diversify Madeira’s tourism offer, provide new ways of experiencing the municipality’s natural landscape and contribute to the regional economy.
However, the proposal has faced significant opposition, particularly over its possible effects on the environment and landscape.
The development will remain subject to further scrutiny and regulatory requirements before it can proceed.
