120 Applicants for 30 Homes

The Regional Government’s affordable rent programme for the new Vale da Ribeira Housing Complex, in Ponta do Sol, received about 120 applications, confirmed Leonel Silva, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Madeira Housing Institute.

Of the applications submitted, only 30 families have now received housing, and there are 40 to 50 families who are considered eligible on the waiting list.

According to the official, the dwellings were assigned through the reduced rent programme, after a public application procedure where families had to present documentation regarding income, household composition and other elements necessary to define the score and final ordering.

The allocation took into account social and economic criteria, with 1 and 2-bedroom apartments and three 3-bedroom dwellings for larger households.

Leonel Silva also revealed that some families ended up giving up their property because they considered that the rent was too high for them.  Leonal stressed that this is not social housing (Council House) but affordable rent calculated according to the income of each household.

The values may vary between around 280 euros and 500 or 600 euros in the larger apartments, depending on the economic situation of the selected families.

The official also explained that the beneficiaries belong mainly to the working middle class, including young couples and families with children. There are no single occupants in any of the properties.
