New Uses For Abandoned Schools

The CDS has presented a proposal for a resolution in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, which aims to inventory and requalify vacant public properties, with a special focus on deactivated schools in more isolated areas of the Region. The proposal highlights that man of the abandoned schools in the region could be turned into community centres, and therefore, respond to the emerging needs of local and more isolated communities.

The project ‘Inventory and Use of Vacant Public Properties in the Autonomous Region of Madeira’ will be debated tomorrow, the 6th of May.

During a visit to the old school of Lombo de São João, in the municipality of Ponta do Sol, deactivated two years ago, deputy Sara Madalena noted the advanced state of degradation of the building. “The lack of use and maintenance naturally leads to the deterioration of spaces. It is imperative to reverse this situation and give a new life to these properties.”

The centrist proposal suggests its requalification for various social purposes, such as the creation of day centres, nursing homes, intergenerational spaces, as well as associative centres, leisure activities and sports. “This reactivation aims not only to strengthen social cohesion, but also to promote the integration of new populations, in view of the growing diversity in Madeiran communities,” she explains.

The CDS-PP considers that this proposal represents a strategic opportunity to enhance the value of vacant public assets and, at the same time, respond to social needs, especially in areas further away from large urban centres. “The initiative underlines the party’s commitment to sustainable development and improving the quality of life of the citizens of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.”
