Miguel Albuquerque Rebuffs Criticism

The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, today rejected the idea that there is widespread criticism of the Flower Exhibition, within the scope of the Flower Festival, arguing that these are “respectable” but minority opinions.

The reaction comes after the environmentalist and geographer Raimundo Quintal classified the exhibition, in Largo da Restauração, as “very poor,” as many of the flowers and vegetation were already dead a few days after the pavilion was inaugurated.

In a statement to journalists, he said:

“There has been a set of perfectly respectable criticisms, but they are not the majority of criticisms,” he said. He also considered that there are always different perspectives on public initiatives and pointed out that some criticism arises from those who, in his opinion, tend to reject changes.

Asked about the quality of this year’s exhibition, Albuquerque acknowledged changes in the format and admitted that projects of this nature are subject to aesthetic evaluation.

“We had to change some things; we made the changes at the Flower Festival. Some things go better in the first year, and others are worse,” he concluded. “Personally, I think the pavilion is very beautiful from an individual point of view. It is a very pleasant area to visit; it is different. We cannot always keep doing the same thing. This year it’s modern, innovative, and attractive.”
