The Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters, the Volunteer Firefighters of São Vicente and Porto Moniz, and the Forest Police have been, since shortly after 2 pm, involved in a complex search and rescue operation in the mountains, in the Fanal area, in Porto Moniz. According to JM, there were two victims, both with serious injuries, after falling 40 metres.
On site are ground teams from the fire brigade and the Forest Police, in an operation led by the mountain rescue team of the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters (BVM), who assisted the victims while the evacuation operation took place.
At 16:23, a news article confirmed the death of a 72-year-old man. The second victim, a 65-year-old woman, was rescued by the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters, was being stabilised by medics, and would then be transported to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal. The woman is said to be in a serious condition.
So far, the causes of the accident are unknown, as well as the identity and nationality of those injured.
