Onions and Onion Festival

The Regional Director for Agriculture and Rural Development was present yesterday, representing the regional secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development. Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, at the official opening of the 27th edition of the Onion Festival, in Caniço.

The leader took the opportunity to highlight that “the services of the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Rural Development have been strengthening the technical assistance provided on an ongoing basis to onion farmers.” In 2024, over 400,000 plants were distributed to the region’s onion producers.

Marco Caldeira also underlined that “the promotion and valorisation of agricultural products from Madeira and Porto Santo contribute to a greater visibility among consumers, and the creation of greater dynamism to the rural economy.”

“It is important to produce what is needed, meeting consumer needs and taking advantage of opportunities to develop a more competitive and profitable agriculture,” he added.

According to the tutelage, Cebola da Madeira has held, since November 2023, the status of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), which identifies it in the European space for its superior quality and particular characteristics.

The Party da Cebola is a joint organization of the Parish Council of Caniço and the Cultural and Musical Association Sons da Tradição, also counting on the collaboration of the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Fisheries, through the Directorate Regional Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, and the co-financing of PEPAC – R.A. Madeira.

The party finishes on Sunday, the 25th of May, and is a great place to visit.  There are outside restaurants, light snacks, plenty of alcohol, excellent live entertainment, and of course, onions.
