Inauguration of Restored Quinta do Serrado

The restored Quinta do Serrado was officially inaugurated in Câmara de Lobos, with the ceremony attended by Madeira’s President, Miguel Albuquerque, the Mayor of Câmara de Lobos and dozens of invited guests.

During the event, owner Ireneusz Migas, who first visited Madeira as a tourist around ten years ago, recalled how the island’s scenery inspired him to return and invest in restoring the historic estate.

In a light-hearted moment, he joked that the Regional Government should “tax the island’s beauty,” prompting laughter from the audience before quickly making it clear that the remark was made in jest.

Reflecting on the project, Migas explained that he spent almost a year searching for a suitable property where he could fulfil his ambition of establishing a vineyard before discovering Quinta do Serrado.

He said that while others saw ageing buildings, some in a state of disrepair, and land dominated by banana plantations, he recognised the estate’s historic potential. According to the owner, the property included a traditional manor house, a historic chapel and evidence of a long-standing winemaking heritage.

Migas explained that the decision to remove the banana plantation surprised some residents, who regarded it as a profitable crop. However, he said the aim of the project has never been solely commercial, but rather to restore the vineyard and preserve the estate’s historical identity.

“I wanted to recreate the vineyard that once existed here and bring this property back to life while respecting its traditions,” he said, adding that he continues to research the history of the estate to better understand its origins.

Describing himself as “almost a resident” of Madeira, Migas said he hopes Quinta do Serrado will become a destination where visitors can experience not only the island’s scenery but also the history, culture and traditions associated with Madeiran wine.
