The Municipality of Funchal (CMF), in connection with municipal markets, has created a diverse range of initiatives and events. Therefore, the CMF is promoting Heart Week, from the 19th to the 23rd of May at the Municipal Markets of Lavradores and Penteada.
With this initiative, it is intended to alert the population to the problem of cardiovascular diseases, encouraging their prevention and early detection, through cardiovascular screenings (blood pressure and cholesterol) and the promotion of healthier lifestyle habits, either through regular physical exercise and/or diet.
At the same time, different dynamics will be developed to encourage visits and use of Municipal Markets, both for the importance they assume in the supply of fresh, local, identity products, and for the proximity services they offer to residents and visitors.
The usual thematic gastronomy fair, on the 22d of May, is part of the programme, providing local entrepreneurs the chance to discover new audiences and diversify the city’s gastronomic identity. The different participants are encouraged to integrate more heart-friendly foods into their preparations, under the slogan, “Feed the Heart.”
At the Farmers’ Market, activities will be carried out during the five days of the event, enabling free cardiovascular screenings, in the terrado area, between 08:00 and 13:00, in partnership with Madeira Quality Care, the Emergency Medical Services, and the Clube Naval do Funchal. In addition to the screenings, awareness-raising actions, workshops, and recreational-pedagogical activities will be promoted, involving and integrating specialists from the private and public sectors.
At the Penteada Market, the activities will focus on Monday, the 19th of May, with free cardiovascular screenings, in the exhibition space, between 09:00 and 12:30, in partnership with Farmácia Nova da Penteada. An outdoor fitness class will also be promoted, under the motto “Activate your Heart,” by the Living Concept Gymnasium, which has also partnered up for this thematic week.
In total, fourteen activities are planned throughout the week, which bring together 4 different activities: screenings, gym classes, awareness-raising, workshops and recreational-pedagogical activities.
