The Judiciary Police (PJ) is investigating the death of a 66-year-old German woman following an incident on Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Santana.
The incident occurred near Estrada da Feiteira de Cima after an altercation between the woman and her 58-year-old Portuguese neighbour.
According to information reported by DIÁRIO, the woman allegedly used pepper spray during the confrontation. The man claims he acted in self-defence by pushing her. It is alleged that the woman then fell, striking her head on the edge of a levada and dying from her injuries. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Santana Volunteer Firefighters, the local health delegate, and officers from the Judiciary Police attended the scene, where investigators carried out forensic examinations and collected evidence.
The suspect has been identified by the authorities and is expected to appear before a court. The investigation is continuing under the direction of the Judiciary Police, which is working to establish the sequence of events and determine the appropriate legal classification of the case.
At this stage, investigators have indicated that the case may fall within the scope of negligent homicide. However, any decision on potential charges will depend on the findings of the investigation and the assessment of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
No charges have yet been announced.
