Funchal Aims to Become The Centre of European Culture

During the inauguration of a new exhibition called 'Blue Light' by Silvestre Pestana at the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, The Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia, confirmed that the exhibition is the first event promoted and organised by the Funchal municipality as part of the Municipality's  candidacy for European Capital of Culture in 2027.  The exhibition is open to the public form today until the 20th of February 2021 and is the creation of the Funchal City Council and ArtWorks.

A Busy Week for The PSP

In a statement issued by the Regional Command of Public Security Police (PSP) Madeira, they confirmed that they had arrested a 39-year-old man from Funchal, who was in possession of 21 individual doses of cocaine, for drug trafficking.

Monte Tree Trial – Day of Reckoning

The two defendants in the Monte Tree Tragedy case, Idalina Perestrelo responsible for Urban Environment, Green and Public Spaces, and the head of the Gardens and Green Spaces Division, Francisco Andrade, will find out today whether they are to stand trial and if so, what crimes will be levied against them. Both were accused by the Public Ministry of 13 crimes of negligent homicide and 49 offences of  involuntary or negligent physical integrity.  

Brightening the Mood

In a press release, LuxStar who are in charge of putting up this year's Christmas lights, have said that work is progressing well, and that they have already started their pre-Christmas testing in certain areas. 

Schools Will Remain Open

When questioned by reporters if Madeira's schools would close early for the Christmas holidays, the President, Miguel Albuquerque said that it would be “counterproductive” since Madeira's schools are “scrupulously complying” with the measures issued by the Regional Director of Health.
