Mercado dos Lavradores Celebrates its 80th Anniversary

This week is the 80th anniversary of Mercado dos Lavradores, and to celebrate this historic event, the Municipality of Funchal (CMF) has created a three day entertainment programme.

This morning (23.11), Chef Susana Freitas, of the Professional School of Hotel and Tourism of Madeira (EPHTM) held a showcooking demonstration in the Market, with several thematic dishes celebrating the anniversary, and the continued collaboration that exists between the municipality and the Hotel school in the promotion and use of regional products.

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 24th, is the markets official anniversary, and the Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia will be attending a special tribute to one of the markets oldest traders at 10.00, with the official opening of a photographic exhibition celebrating the markets history.  The exhibition includes photographs donated by the Regional Directorate of Archives and Library of Madeira.

As a way of highlighting the social mission of the Mercado dos Lavradores, the Mayor will deliver 80 baskets of fruits and vegetables to people with socio-economic needs, who are over 80 years old throughout the week.  This is alongside various other initiatives, including “Mercado em Casa” where the municipality of Funchal guarantees free delivery of fruit and vegetables purchased in the Municipal Markets to the elderly and those suffering disabilities, and “Funchal, Cabaz Vital” who deliver fresh produce to families affected by the crisis.

Finally, on November the 25th the market will be hosting its ‘Winter Market’ which comprises of accessories and decorations.

Inaugurated on the 24th of November 1940, the Mercado dos Lavradores is not only a popular tourist attraction but remains a focal point for the islands agricultural and fishing industry.
