‘Injustice Can Never be Erased With Another’

This morning, the Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia offered his support to Idalina Perestrelo and Francisco Andrade, both of whom are accused of negligent homicide after a tree collapsed in Monte on the 15th of August 2017, killing 13 people and injuring 49.

Writing on his Facebook page, he said “Because, as in so many situations in life, to be silent is to condone injustices, I could not fail to express my total solidarity with Idalina Perestrelo and Francisco Andrade who, in the performance of their duties in the Funchal municipality, found themselves dragged into a media frenzy. I am sure that they have fulfilled all their responsibilities as civil servants with zeal and professionalism, and do not deserve the ordeal to which they will be subjected. You will be able to count on my collaboration in the difficult times that lie ahead, in the certainty, that one injustice will never be erased with another.”
