Record Temperatures for Greenhouse Gases, Sea Levels and Temperatures in 2020

A report released by the American Meteorological Society, which assesses climatic changes in 60 countries, based on the data received from approximately 530 scientists, reveals that several climate indicators, such as greenhouse gases, sea levels and temperatures hit record heights in 2020.  

2021 – A Bee Recovery Year

As a whole, Portugal's (including Madeira which produces approximately 46 tonnes a year), honey sector was not significantly impacted by the pandemic, and is even showing signs of recovery after a series of 'bad bee years (2018 - 2020)' where production dropped by 80% due to the Asian wasp problem, and climatic change which has affected the flowering season of many plants.

Canhas Cable Car to be Revamped

Célia Pessegueiro, Mayor of Ponta do Sol and PS candidate announced today that, "after several years of only transporting cargo and serving the needs of local farmers, the Canhas cable car will undergo a formal certification and upgrade which will allow it to be used to transport people as well as goods, making it a viable tourist attraction as well as a profitable enterprise.

Almirante Reis Gardens Are a Disgrace

Pedro Calado, the leader of the Funchal Semper à Frente Coalition, accompanied by some of his team members, visited the gardens of Almirante Reis, Old Town, today, and definitely did not like what he saw, saying that the public gardens are both degraded and abandoned, and as such, he is committing himself and his team to renovating this unique urban green space.  

Spreading Arboreal Panic

In lieu on the Monte tree incident this afternoon, members of the People's Monarchist Party (PPM - Madeira) visited some of the Funchal's arboreal spaces, and have identified another 'potential tree catastrophe' in a garden behind the Dr. Agostinho Cardoso Health Centre, Campo do Barco.  The tree is hollow and in danger of falling. 

Role of Bats in Agriculture Discussed

On the 14th of June at the Gonçalves Zarco Basic and Secondary School, tropical biologist Ricardo Rocha, researcher in the field of Nature Conservation, researcher at the Research Centre for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources of the University of Porto, and bat specialist held a seminar on the  importance of "Bats as agricultural pest controllers in Madagascar and Madeira."
