Nearly 3 Million Bees Incinerated in Machico Fire

The 16th of August Machico fire, which was caused by someone using an angle grinder, destroyed 37 beehives belonging to beekeeper Pedro David Viveiros.

According to the owner, “his registered hives were destroyed, causing the death and incineration of some 740,000 – 2,960,000 honey bees, who are also essential pollinators.  Even though two bee hives remained intact, the bees inside all died from the heat and noxious fumes.”

These hives, if it hadn’t been for someone’s stupidity, would have yielded 900 kg of honey this year!
