Depression Leonardo is expected to affect the archipelago of Madeira between February 3rd and 6th, bringing intense winds, precipitation, and significant sea agitation.
According to the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), the depression is expected to be centered at 49° North and 26° West on February the 4th, approximately 1,100 km north of the Azores, with a pressure of 969 hPa at its center.
The frontal systems associated with Leonardo will cause periods of rain, especially in the western part of Madeira, being more intense and widespread in the archipelago on the night and morning of February 5th.
The wind will be predominant from the West quadrant, stronger on the night of February 4th, 5th, and 6th with gusting reaching 85 km/h, and up to 95 km/h in the highlands.
Rough seas are expected, especially on the North coasts, with waves from the West quadrant between 4 and 5 metres, increasing to 5 to 7 metres from the 5th. Please note that waves could reach up to 12 metres, and the population is advised to take the necessary precautions and avoid coastal areas during this period.
The IPMA has placed the coast under yellow and orange weather warnings for wind and sea agitation, and an additional precipitation warning may be issued for the night of February 4th to 5th.
The IPMA recommends the population to closely follow the updates of the meteorological service and to take precautions, especially in coastal areas and in the highlands.
