Safety Barriers Ignored

The PSP’s Madeira Regional Command has announced that some parts of the island at risk of landslides and rockfalls have been cordoned off and are now closed to traffic.

In a publication released on social networks this Sunday, the PSP says that, despite the existing warnings, there are still situations in which drivers ignore the signs, cross physical barriers, and, in more serious cases, remove barriers from the site, exposing themselves and others to “real and imminent danger.”

The PSP stresses that barriers and signs placed on the roads are not done on a whim.  People must understand that it is not always possible to guarantee a permanent police presence or responsible entities in all compromised areas.

Furthermore, they warn that ignoring ‘Do Not Enter’ zones can result in serious injuries or even loss of life.  The signs are there to protect life, not make life difficult.

In the same note, the Regional Command of Madeira calls for strict compliance with existing signage and the adoption of responsible behaviour by drivers, stressing that the prevention of accidents and the protection of human life depend on the attitude of each citizen.
