A man believed to be in his mid-50s has died after being stabbed in Câmara de Lobos on Wednesday morning. A suspect has since been identified and detained, while the Judiciary Police (PJ) continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The incident occurred shortly before 06.30 on Avenida Nova Cidade, close to the Cidade Nova neighbourhood. Initial reports suggested the stabbing may have taken place during an attempted robbery of a commercial establishment. However, subsequent information indicates that the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
The Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) confirmed to DIÁRIO that the suspect has been identified, taken into police custody, and detained. The case has now been formally handed over to the Judiciary Police, which is carrying out investigative steps to establish the motive for the crime and the events leading up to the fatal attack.
According to DIÁRIO, the victim and the suspect lived on adjacent floors of the same building and had reportedly been involved in a long-running dispute, which is said to have also involved members of their respective families.
The newspaper further reports that the suspect had a previous criminal record and had allegedly threatened the victim on earlier occasions. Investigators are now seeking to determine whether those alleged threats were directly connected to the fatal stabbing.
The attack took place on the public road, where the victim was allegedly stabbed with a knife. Câmara de Lobos Volunteer Firefighters and the EMIR rapid medical response team attended the scene and carried out resuscitation efforts before transporting the man in a critical condition to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, he later died from his injuries.
The PSP initially secured the scene and established a security cordon before responsibility for the investigation was transferred to the Judiciary Police, the authority responsible for investigating homicide cases.
The investigation is now focused on gathering forensic evidence, interviewing witnesses, and establishing the precise circumstances and motive behind the killing.
Once the current investigative phase has been completed, the suspect will be brought before the competent judicial authority for an initial hearing, during which the court will decide whether to impose any coercive measures while the investigation continues.
