2.6 Thousand Tonnes of Grapes Harvested

“Up until now, 2.6 thousand tonnes of grapes have been harvested this year,” revealed the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Marciel.

Grape producers have benefited from approximately 503,000 euros of Community Aid through the Regional Budget; the funds were expected to reach the farmers in September. Furthermore, the Regional Government will pay 200 euros per tonne of Tinta Negra Grape Variety.

Nuno Marciel also recalled that “the Madeiran wine sector is a regional brand internationally recognised for its quality wines and, as such, is important to the Regional Government, which will continue to support the sector.”

Lastly, the Regional Secretary stressed that, “in addition to financial support, a continuous work to enhance production, promote in foreign markets, and to stimulate generational renewal, so that new generations of farmers can continue this century-old tradition, which contributes so much to the economy and cultural identity of Madeira. This, “he said, includes:

“Continuous training throughout the year through the IVBAM ensures that farmers can obtain the best quality crops. In addition to training, the IVBAM continues its research work in vineyards located in Caniçal and Cardais in SĂŁo Vicente. Only with more knowledge will it be possible to create crops that are more resistant to pests and climate change,” he concluded.
