Santo da Serra Market Reopens

The Municipality of Santa Cruz today inaugurated the newly renovated Santo António da Serra Market, with renovation works costing in the region of one million euros.

A press release announced that the market has been fully modernized and upgraded, enhancing safety, functionality, and comfort for traders, producers, and visitors, while preserving the authenticity and traditional charm that have defined this regional hub for decades. A standout feature of the renovation is the new tensioned roof, a modern architectural design previously used by the Municipality at the Filipe Mota Sports Complex in Camacha, giving the space a fresh visual identity.

The market now features 67 spaces, with 63 already bustling with activities ranging from horticulture and fruit production to honey, cider, poncha, liqueurs, flowers, plants, regional crafts, meat, restaurants, and beverages. Known as one of Madeira’s most popular Sunday destinations, the Santo Market stands out for its strong identity and significant economic and tourism appeal.

During the ceremony, the Mayor of the Municipality, Élia Ascensão, underlined that the intervention represents “an investment in people, in the local economy and in the enhancement of the rural identity of the municipality”, reinforcing “the commitment to high areas, local agriculture, small producers and territorial cohesion.”

The intention to progressively extend the market’s activity to other days of the week, starting with Saturdays, was also announced, as a strategy to boost the economy and tourism of the locality.

The ceremony was marked by the blessing of the space, in a symbolic moment that celebrated the market as a place for meeting, working, coexistence, and preserving local identity.
