Low Harvest, Better Quality

Wine producers have stated that wine production this year is expected to be lower than in previous years in Madeira.  However, the quality of the grapes may compensate for the low production, caused by adverse weather conditions.

At the opening of the Wine Festival, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture acknowledged that there could be a decrease in production this year, based on the information he has received, but he believes that it is early days and comparisons should not be made.

“The most important aspect is that at least the quality is maintained”, highlighted Eduardo Jesus, at the opening of this event in Praça do Povo, where 12 producers and the Madeira Bartenders Association are showcasing their products.

During the opening ceremony, local newspaper, JM, spoke to two wine producers.

Octávio Ferraz, from Palmeira e Voltas and Xavelha wines, confirmed that this year’s production is not very fantastic. Accustomed to producing four thousand bottles of white wine a year, as many bottles of red and rosé every three years, he now anticipates a bad year; he just doesn’t know how bad it will be yet. This, he says, will depend on the harvest.

The Terras do Avô wine house, which includes Sofia Caldeira as one of the partners, historically has high production outputs and also envisages a weak year. In its best year ever, Terras do Avô reached 45 thousand bottles. But, normally, production is focused on more than 20 thousand bottles. This year could be smaller, similar to what happened last year.  “Climate changes are affecting the amount of grapes available, and this is the second year that crops have been affected.” States Sofia Caldeira.

Despite the not-so-good news, wine producers say that they are going to enjoy this year’s wine festival.
