Madeira Needs to Take Advantage of World Conflict

“Nação Valente”, by João Annes, was presented on Wednesday afternoon in Funchal, at a ceremony held at the Savoy Palace Hotel. The session was attended by the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, as well as several figures linked to regional culture, in addition to senior officials in the Armed Forces.

With a preface by Álvaro Beleza, the work offers a reflection on the challenges Portugal faces today, leading the reader to a crossroads of analysis grounded in a “realistic and pragmatic view of national sovereignty in the 21st century.”

Throughout the book, João Annes presents an integrated proposal for the Portuguese State. More than an analysis, “Nação Valente” assumes itself as a roadmap of action, aimed at all Portuguese who refuse to accept passivity in the face of the political, economic, and social impacts of contemporary crises.

The event, promoted by the Delegation of the Autonomous Region of Madeira of the Association of Auditors of National Defence Courses (AACDN), took place in the Bellevue Room of the Savoy Palace, followed by a debate that was open to the public.

The initiative, according to the organisation, is to bring civil society closer to National Security and Defence issues, promoting a reflection on strategy, sovereignty, and the role of political and military institutions in protecting the country’s interests.

At the launch, Miguel Albuquerque argued that Portugal does not invest in the Region, especially in the geopolitical space of the Atlantic. As for the author, João Annes, he states that Madeira will be able to take advantage of global armed conflicts to increase its supply capacity in areas such as tourism and technologies, making the most of submarine cables and drone engineering.
