The Electricity Company of Madeira (EEM) began a major logistical operation in Porto Santo this afternoon to unload and transport the components of the wind turbines that will form part of the island’s new wind farm.
Due to the considerable size and weight of the equipment, the operation is expected to affect road traffic for approximately 15 days, particularly along Porto Santo’s waterfront. Traffic management and safety measures have been implemented throughout the transport route to minimise disruption and ensure public safety.
In a statement, EEM appealed for the understanding and cooperation of residents and visitors, urging drivers and pedestrians to follow all signage and the instructions of teams working on the ground.
Beyond its logistical significance, the transport operation also provides a visible demonstration of the scale and technology involved in what is considered a strategic investment in Porto Santo’s energy future.
The new Porto Santo Wind Farm, fully financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), will consist of two wind turbines, each with a generating capacity of 3.8 MW, providing a total installed capacity of 7.6 MW.
Together with the island’s existing 20 MW battery storage system, a 2 MW solar photovoltaic plant, and the new wind farm, Porto Santo’s renewable energy capacity will increase to 14 MW.
The integration of wind power, solar energy, and battery storage will create the conditions for the island to be supplied entirely by renewable energy sources during certain periods of the year, allowing the thermal power station to remain offline whenever renewable resources are sufficient.
Once the project is completed, renewable energy is expected to account for between 60 and 70 per cent of Porto Santo’s annual electricity production, significantly reducing the island’s dependence on fossil fuels while strengthening the use of clean energy sources.
The installation of the new wind farm represents another important step in the Regional Government’s strategy to increase energy autonomy across the Region. The project further reinforces Porto Santo’s renewable energy production capacity and strengthens Madeira’s commitment to decarbonisation, sustainability, and transition to clean energy.
