The 53-year-old Czech tourist (not about 40 years old as initially reported) who fell and died this morning after falling 50 metres from the Juncal Viewpoint, in Pico do Areeiro, was not on a recommended pedestrian route.
The viewpoint and the access route, which starts at the entrance of Radar Station No. 4, is not on the list of classified pedestrian routes of the IFCN, but in the past, it was maintained by the Regional Government (GR).
Just last year, this was one of the viewpoints that was part of the list that the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment was considering charging for, as it’s a popular sunrise viewpoint.
Our condolences to the man’s family and friends.
