The Institute of Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts of Madeira (IVBAM) will carry out “a series of six educational courses aimed at the region’s grape growers. The courses aim to strengthen farmers’ technical knowledge and promote good practices in Madeiran viticulture.”
The sessions will be taught by technicians from the Division of IVBAM viticulture who will address fundamental themes for the success of production wine, namely the fight against diseases and pests of the vine (plant health), green interventions, recommended during plant growth to improve the quality and quantity of production, as well as cultural pre-harvest tasks.
Furthermore, participants will also receive guidance on the technical support provided by IVBAM on harvesting, clarifications on the rules for new plantations, vineyard restructuring, and caste changes.
In order to reach as many grape producers as possible, the courses will take place between the 2nd and 6th of June across the region. There will be a separate course in Porto Santo on the 11th.
The six sessions are free of charge and will take place in the following locations:
- June 2 at 6:00 pm – Estreito da Calheta, Estreito da Calheta Civic Center;
- June 3 at 7:00 pm – Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Estreito de C. Lobos Civic Centre;
- June 4 at 6:00 p.m. – St. George’s Arch, Museum of Vine and Wine;
- June 5 at 6:00 p.m. – São Paulo Vicente, São Vicente Agricultural School;
- June 6 at 6:00 p.m. – Seixal, Seixal Parish Council;
- June 11 at 7:00 pm – Porto Santo, in Campo Experimental of Farrobo;
It should be noted that these actions represent an opportunity for local grape producers to update their knowledge and clarify any worries directly with specialists, thus contributing to the appreciation and sustainability of the Madeiran wine sector.
