PS – Madeira: We Will Create an Agriculture Reserve

The leader of the PS/Madeira has guaranteed that if the PS is in government, an agricultural reserve will be created in the Region. A way, explained Paulo Cafôfo, to ensure that the most fertile land is destined for the maintenance and enhancement of agriculture and, at the same time, to help combat real estate speculation and mitigate the housing problem, taking into account that, as he explained, this measure will allow the owners of this land to build their homes there, on the condition that they remain farming the land.

In an initiative promoted at the Penteada market, the socialist leader stressed that the PS is always on the side of farmers, with measures to value agriculture and improve the income of “people who do so much for Madeira working the land.” Something that, he stressed, does not have to be slavery, but paid work with the dignity that this activity deserves.

Paulo Cafôfo recalled that Madeira is the only region in the country that does not have an agricultural reserve and stressed that it is essential to value agriculture, not only to ensure productivity but also because this activity allows the maintenance of the landscape and the security of the territory. “Abandoned land is a fire hazard, endangering people and property,” he warned.

Asserting that, with a socialist government, an agricultural reserve will be created, saving the most fertile land for agriculture thus counteracting the decline in farming.

“With an agricultural reserve we would take a step forward to continue our agriculture, give it the support it deserves, and create greater productivity,” reinforced the president of the PS-M, explaining that this measure would also have another benefit. As he noted, the objective is to allow landowners to build their homes there as well, which will “not favour or promote real estate speculation,” which has contributed to the housing crisis in Madeira, where an overwhelming majority of Madeirans are unable to buy a house.

By creating this reserve we will ensure that prime agricultural land is not turned over to luxury housing projects that only benefit the rich.
