The Portuguese head of state, António José Seguro, today expressed solidarity with US President Donald Trump and condemned any attack against democratic institutions or freedom of the press.
“Violence has no place in democracy. Any attack against democratic institutions or freedom of the press deserves strong condemnation,” said António José Seguro, in a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
This position of the President of the Republic was released following the shooting incident that led to Donald Trump being removed from the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association in Washington on Saturday night.
In the note published today, titled “President of the Republic condemns attack in the United States and expresses solidarity with his US counterpart,” António José Seguro expressed his solidarity with Donald Trump and other participants in that dinner.
The Portuguese prime minister also reacted to the incident through his social network account on X.
“I strongly condemn the attempted attack tonight against the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump. Democracy and those who defend it cannot tolerate or compromise with political violence,” wrote Luís Montenegro.
