In the last five years, the Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC), has undertaken on average, 160 search and rescue missions in the mountainous regions of Madeira and Porto Santo.
Incident hot spots include Santana and Calheta, although Funchal and Machico also appear at the top of the list, having recorded the highest number of accidents on levadas and pedestrian trails.
