Despair Over Lack of Social Security Measures

After yesterday's tragic incidence when a restaurant worker, suffering financial distress after his boss failed to pay his wages despite agreeing to a payment plan, barricaded himself inside the restaurant where he worked and threatened to kill himself, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) announced this morning that there are literally thousands of people who are unable to access any form of social security support.

Increased Poverty – New Challenges Ahead

With a world in turmoil and an increase in global poverty especially among the most vulnerable sections of the community, the EAPN - Portugal/European Anti Poverty Network, has proposed that governments and social entities start thinking about the challenges ahead and how to tackle what is increasingly becoming a widespread and complex problem.

Portuguese League Against Cancer – Let’s Get Physical

The European Week Against Cancer Campaign ran from the 25th to the 31st of May and aimed to raise cancer prevention and treatment awareness as well as support for survivors.  In Madeira, the Portuguese League Against Cancer are running this campaign and as part of this activity are challenging the local community to 48 hours of physical activity between the 6th and 7th of June with participants either walking, running, swimming or cycling (indoor, road or mountain biking) as a way of showing how important exercise is in the prevention of cancer.

Restaurants can request “Clean & Safe Seal”

The attribution of the “Clean & Safe Seal”, already available for Local Lodging accommodations (“AL”), will be extended to restaurants and cafés. Completely free, voluntary and automatically issued on the spot, the “Clean & Safe Seal” visually reflects the operators’ commitment to the guidelines from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).…
