Lugar de Baixo – Problems Need to be Resolved

Socialist Party (PS) deputy, Carlos Coelho, recently spoke out at a political party summit categorically stating that the problems concerning the Lugar de Baixo marina have to be resolved, commenting that "this problem has remained unresolved for almost twenty years! Furthermore, the marina impacts on the area both environmentally and visually, and just as importantly it remains a security issue."

Carnival is a No Go!

Just to confirm, the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture has announced that there will be no entertainment or local events for carnival this year, and this includes Carnival Day (16th of February).  However, it is expected that many of the island's museums will be celebrating the day in their own quiet way. 

Barrier Erected Between Poiso and Pico do Areeiro

Workers from the Regional Directorate for Roads today installed an iron barrier across the road connecting Poiso and Pico do Areeiro, in order to prevent people driving up into the mountains during bad weather conditions, i.e. snow.  Obviously, the barrier will be raised during normal - good weather, and its installation will enable the police and Forestry police to make more effective use of their resources. 

The President of Portugal to Visit Santana

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has accepted an invitation for the Mayor of Santana, Dinarte Fernandes, to visit the parish when it is safe to travel.  On hearing the news, the Mayor said "it is, in fact, a source of pride. Above all, it provides an opportunity for us to discuss the various aspects of the parish, as well as feel that we are valued by the Republic of Portugal."
