Until 4 pm this afternoon, the rain in Santana reached red warning values, with the weather station registering 64.3 mm per square metre in six hours, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, the highest value in the network of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This belongs to the criteria of extreme precipitation, above 60 mm in 6 hours, associated with the issuance of a red warning.
In Santana, 17.8 mm of rain was recorded in one hour, a value corresponding to a yellow warning.
In the last 24 hours, since 16:00 yesterday, Santana has recorded an accumulated rainfall of more than 120 mm, being the municipality most affected by precipitation in the archipelago.
It is followed by Porto Santo, with more than 70 mm accumulated in the same period, and Caniçal, with values that exceed 50 mm.
In addition to Santana, persistent rainfall reached yellow warning levels in other weather stations, especially on the northern slope of the island of Madeira, in mountainous areas, and in Porto Santo.
In Chão do Areeiro, 30.9 mm were recorded in six hours, while in Porto Santo/Airport, 12.9 mm of precipitation was recorded in one hour and 39.2 mm in six hours.
Caniçal (16.1 mm/1h), Ponta de São Jorge (11.4 mm/1h), São Vicente (11.4 mm/1h), and Santa Cruz/Aeroporto (10.5 mm/1h) also recorded precipitation within the yellow warning criteria.
In addition to the heavy rainfall, 15 flights have been cancelled and 8 diverted. There are also reports that the Porto Santo Airport Terminal building has been affected by the bad weather.
