Heavy Rain Affects Ponta do Sol

The meteorological station of the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) in Lugar de Baixo recorded, at the beginning of Tuesday night, the most intense downpour seen in Madeira, with an accumulation of 11.8 mm of precipitation between 21:00 and 22:00. This value corresponds to the yellow warning threshold for precipitation.

The period of greatest intensity occurred between 21:11 and 21:40. In this interval, 3.9mm of rain were recorded in 10 minutes (between 21:11 and 21:20) and 8.8mm in 30 minutes (between 21:11 and 21:40).

Of the 18 IPMA weather stations on the island of Madeira, 13 recorded precipitation on Tuesday. However, the accumulated amounts were much lower than those seen in Ponta do Sol. The Santo da Serra station was the second recording 6.1mm of rainfall.

Rain was not recorded at the following weather stations:- Cancela/SRPC, Funchal/Lido, Prazeres, Ponta do Pargo, Pico do Areeiro, and Porto Santo.
